Case Study on Being Selfless

Here's a long post with every verse I can find on Selflessness and Selfishness! (I decided to do this, along with my fellow Interns at the HA)

Psalm 119:36
"Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain."

(Clearly "selfish gain" is not a statute of God.)

Proverbs 18:1
"An unfriendly person pursues selfish ends and against all sound judgment starts quarrels."

(Unfriendliness and selfishness are partners in crime, to be unfriendly is to not be loving.)

2 Corinthians 12:20
"For I am afraid that when I come I may not find you as I want you to be, and you may not find me as you want me to be. I fear that there may be discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder."

(Paul feared finding people being selfish)

Galatians 5:20
"idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions"

(From the list of things that are NOT of the Fruits of the Spirit)

Philippians 1:17
"The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains."

(We can be "doing ministry" and have selfish gains in mind.)

Philippians 2:3
"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,"

(We should humble ourselves, not think highly and have selfish gains for ourselves.)

James 3:14
"But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth."

(We should not be proud or hide the we are selfish.)

James 3:16
"For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice."

(Selfishness is soil for evil to grow inside of us.)

Ezekiel 16:49

"Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy."

(Sodom was guilty of not helping others, being selfish with what they had.)

Matthew 6:2-4

“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

(Giving to the needy, and being selfless and valuing others above ourselves is one of the most important things we can do.)

John 1 15:13

"Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends."

(The greatest way to love is to be selfless and be willing to give even your life for others.)

Corinthians 13:4-5

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs."

(Love is not self seeking)

Romans 5:8

"But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

(Christ dying for us was the greatest act of selfless love)

Romans 2:8
"But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger."

(Godly wrath follows those who are only self-seeking.)

Matthew 23:25
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence."

(People can look good on the outside and on the inside they are filled with selfishness.)
